Warming Up For Fall Sports: High Flying Stunts & Hairspray

At every pep rally, BT students get a preview of the competition cheerleading squad’s latest routine. To the untrained eye, it may just seem like a series of awe-inspiring flips and stunts, but people do not always take into account the amount of time and practice the girls put into their choreography.

Coached by former BT student, Shauna Korner ’06, the girls endure rigorous practices every week to perfect the routine. “This year, Shauna Korner, a former Falcons cheerleader, is our new coach,” said senior Adison Nikolai.  “She pushes us at practice and although practices are difficult, we know it is going to be worth it in the end.”

The girls on the squad all share a strong passion for competition. The exhilaration of being in front of huge crowds with just your girls on the mat is indescribable. “My favorite part of cheerleading is competing,” said Adison. “There is nothing like the feeling of hitting a perfect routine.”

“I am looking for a solid successful season! I think this year we have a lot of potential. It will take a lot of hard work but I know it will pay off,” said senior Lauren Nichols.

This year, the competition cheerleading squad has a strong core group of seniors who are all leaders on the team. “As a senior I feel like I have more of an influence on the squad,” said Lauren. “Our team as a whole is very tight and we treat each other the same, but you can never put aside the point and leadership of seniority. I have waited three years for this and I will enjoy every bit of it. I am so excited for this season but also a bit sad as it will be the last time cheering with all of my favorite girls! I will never forget the memories I have made with this team.”
